Healthcare & Mental Health
Free and low-cost health care is available through community health centers, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), and mobile clinics. You don't need insurance, an ID, or money to be seen at most of these locations. Mental health services — including therapy and medication — are often available at the same sites.
What to expect
What happens when you ask for this kind of help
Every program is different, but here is what most people experience when they reach out for healthcare & mental health help.
- FQHCs charge on a sliding scale — often $0–$40 per visit based on income. No one is turned away for inability to pay.
- Mental health services, including counseling and psychiatric medication, are available at most community health centers.
- Dental and vision care are offered at some FQHCs — ask when you call.
- Staff can help you enroll in Medicaid (AHCCCS in Arizona, Medi-Cal in California, etc.) during your visit.
- Mobile health units visit shelters, encampments, and day centers in many cities — ask a shelter case manager about local schedules.
