Weather & seasonal safety

San Joaquin County has real weather extremes: triple-digit Central Valley heat in summer and cold, foggy nights in winter. Both can be dangerous if you’re unsheltered. Call 2-1-1 (or 1-800-436-9997) to find which sites are activated near you — cooling and warming locations open and close with the forecast.

Heat Season · June – September

Stay cool, hydrated, and out of the sun

Summer afternoons in Stockton routinely reach 95–105°F. During extreme-heat events, the county and cities open cooling centers (often libraries and senior/community centers) and 211 keeps the current list. Day centers below offer water, shade, and a place to rest.

In a medical heat emergency (confusion, no sweating, fainting), call 911.

Cold & Fog · November – February

Winter nights and Tule fog

Valley winter nights drop into the 30s, and dense Tule fog raises the risk of exposure and traffic danger. There is no single regional cold-weather hotline — warming sites and shelter overflow are handled site-by-site. Call 211 to find what’s open tonight.
